Whether you prefer to enjoy a pie at a bakery for your Sunday lunch, or perhaps straight out of the bag on the go, or even at 2am after a big night out on the town, there’s no questioning that pies are an Australian icon.

Pies take a few forms here in Australia, but today we’re focusing on savoury pies – those with a flaky and buttery pastry shell, with a hot, savoury filling inside.

Over the years, we’ve tried countless pies and found a few places that we now regularly visit for a pie hit when that craving strikes and we’re here to share them with you.

1) Lode

Decorated Lode Pie

If you’re on the hunt for Instagrammable pies and pastries, Lode has you covered. Their aesthetic and delicious puff pastry pies have been mastered by renowned chefs, Federico Zanellato and Loranzo Librino.

Lode focuses on adding “layers of goodness” into each and everyone of their dishes and stay true to the original pie, while adding their own signature twist. We recommend the LuMi Pie – wagyu & shiitake mushrooms served with a chicken glaze… Need we say more?

2) Black Star Pastry

Sure, Black Star Pastry makes some of the best cakes we’ve ever had… But have you tried their pies? As masters in pastry making, we can say with confidence that Black Star Pastry’s pies are one of Sydney’s best.

If you’re after a delectable beef pie, try the beer & brisket. Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste like a brewery… instead, the beer takes this pie to the next level. Or, if you want to try a signature Japanese dish in the form of a pie, we highly recommend their Japanese Curry pie.

3) The Pie Tin

The Pie Tin is home to a wide range of pies that are handmade and baked fresh daily. As well as their traditional pie flavours, they also let their creativity shine. Feeling adventurous? Try their Aussie pie, ‘Steak & Vegemite’. Trust us, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

… Ok, we know that we said we’re focusing on savoury pies in this blog, but we just had to mention The Pie Tin’s indulgent sweet pies. Explore their sweet pie menu for dessert, because who can ever have too much pie?

4) The Grumpy Baker

The Grumpy Baker is one of Sydney’s gems. Known for their popular freshly baked bread, The Grumpy Baker can also create an amazing pie. In fact, their puff pastry pies sell out VERY quickly! They’re experts in perfecting traditional flavours and their pie range includes fillings with slow braised meats and vegetable – we love the Moroccan Lamb.

Make sure to also grab a loaf of bread or two while you’re there!

5) Glenorie Bakery

Founded in 1992, Glenorie Bakery has made baking history, literally! They’re the home of the Pie of Origin, creators of the Invictus Pie and made Australia’s biggest cupcake in 2010.

Glenorie Bakery’s signature meat pies have been voted Sydney’s No.1 pies a few times over the years and it comes down to their signature gravy mix and beef sourced directly from the farmer and processed by their in-house butchers.

whole pies and halfed pies on a table with sauce

We all love pies and enjoy them differently – sauce or no sauce, eat the top crust first, use a knife and fork or bite straight into it. No matter how you like to eat your pie, we know that you’ll love these recommendations.
